"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him, do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass" (Psalm 37:7).
It was no wonder that God called David, "a friend after My own heart." David was a person who did not allow his circumstances to overshadow his God. Someone has said that either your God will overshadow your problems, or your problems will overshadow your God. Either your problems are too small for your God, or your God is too small for your problems.
David was cognizant of the fact that his God was too big for his problems that no matter how big his problem appears to be, God could handle it for him. For one thing, David knew that he served the living God, who spoke the universe into existence. David's God is infinite, sovereign, and Almighty. His God has the world in His hands. The God of David controls the affairs of the universe. David knew that the living God is the source and epitome of all blessings. Therefore, why should he be envious of the prosperity of the wicked?
The difference between David and some twenty-first century Christians is that David did not focus on his problems, adversities, and setbacks. Today, when many Christians fall into hard times, they begin to focus on their circumstances instead of focusing on Christ. In so doing, their circumstances throw them into a state of confusion and panic. A typical example today is the global economic downturn, which has thrown many believers into a panic mode. However, if you believe that there is no situation or circumstance of life that is beyond the control of Jesus Christ, you are on your way to complete recovery and victory.
David fled from his enemies not because he was afraid of them, but rather to protect his life and seek counsel from God. What do you do when you are in trouble? When you are tempted to be envious of someone what do you do? David rested in the Lord and waited patiently for Him. To wait on the Lord means not to fret, be calm, be undisturbed, and be relaxed before the Lord.
David brought his case before the divine court of justice, and asked God to preside and defend his cause. David was saying, Lord God, handle my case for me. I don't have the power and the resources to deal with this case. It is beyond my capability and strength to deal with this case. "I know that I am finite but you are the infinite God, I am limited but you are limitless, and I am not self-sufficient but you are self-sufficient, so solve my problem for me." When you recognize that you are at your wits end and call upon the Lord that is when God steps in to perform some of His supernatural miracles in your life. We make God glad when we go to Him with our problems and ask Him to take absolute control. Today, what burdens are you carrying? What are the things that give you sleepless nights? What are your anxieties today? Bring them before the living God and He will lift them up from your shoulders and give you His rest.
I am concerned and amazed that our political leaders have succumbed to the threats and pressures from the atheists and agnostics of this country and ACLU that they are afraid to bring the problems of this nation before God in prayer. They have allowed these entities to hold this nation hostage against God and Christianity. Look at the present impasse and the stalemate between the Republican Majority Congress on one hand, and the President of the United States and the Democrat controlled Senate on the other hand, concerning the debt ceiling. None of our leaders is saying, "Let's seek the help of God in this matter by taking it to Him in prayer." However, wisdom and solution to insurmountable problems come from God. The caution is that when a nation abandons or departs from God chaos, confusion, unrest, and suffering set in. It is time the United States return to God and "rest in Him."
