The story is told of a woman who approached Mr. D. L.
Moody after one of his messages with a complaint. The woman moaned, “Mr. Moody,
I can’t read the Bible for myself because there are too many things in it I
don’t understand.” Mr. Moody responded, “My good lady, have you ever eaten
chicken?” Somewhat annoyed, she replied, “Of course, I have,” she fired back.
“Well, then,” Moody continued to press, “What did you do with the bones of the
chicken?” I put them on the side of my plate,” she answered with exasperation.
“Good,” Moody commented; “Then do the same thing when you are reading the Bible
for yourself. Put any hard things on the side of your plate, because there is
still plenty of good eating on the majority of what the Bible has to say.”[1]
This
is not your basic apologetic method, but it does make a strong point.
